The Best Question Ever – Andy Stanley

I just finished reading the book The Best Question Ever by Andy Stanley.  He makes some really good points in the book, yet I am left with an overwhelmingly bad taste in my mouth.  I was excited to read the book and to see what a great thinker and pastor might posit as the defining question of life.  I was dismayed to see him reduce it to logical living, and only add God in the final chapter.  I think there is some value to what he says is the best question.  Asking, ‘what is the wise thing to do?’ will lead you to make better choices and to a point with less regret.  I still think I could find that wisdom from any number of books that I picked up at Barnes & Noble in the self-help section.  I started reading this book looking for some meat, but found none.  I have a different question that guides my decision making in life.  I find it clearly stated in the New Testament, and try to make it the define principle in my life.  Consider these following verses.

31So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31

17And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17

11whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.   1 Peter 4:11

When I read these words of Peter and Paul, I am left with one conclusion: I should do all things in life for God’s glory.  In Romans 12:1, Paul urges us to offer as bodies as living sacrifices that are holy and pleasing to God, as a spiritual act of worship.  Worship is to consume our lives.  Worship is all about putting God is in rightful place and honoring Him for His character and His nature.  Worship is about God’s glory.  When we live our lives for God’s glory alone, we are living in worship, and living for His Kingdom.

To me that is the guiding principle of life.  The greatest question to me is: ‘What will bring God the greatest Glory?’  If we make that our standard for making decisions, our lives will become wrapped around Him, and so intertwined with Him.  I pray that we can all continually move forward to living for Him and His glory.
