Being The Cow

Recently I had one of the coolest experiences of my life. I got to be one of the Chick-fil-A cows on the field at the University of Oklahoma/Notre Dame football game. Running out onto the field to cheers was exciting. There were some boos and I was hit hard in the head by someone while posing for a picture. But all in all it was a good day. Here are some pictures from the day.

Replacement Refs & Grace

In case you have not heard there are replacement referees currently being employed in the NFL.  The league and the union for the regular officials are at an impasse in negotiations and the NFL has locked out the regular officials.  Now I typically always side with management when it comes to union disputes.  I am not a union guy.  I think they hurt the job market these days.  One time they were useful but I believe their need has run its course.  However this is not a political blog so I won’t delve further into this mire, I just wanted to lay my cards on the table as far as my personal feelings in this dispute.  These replacement refs have been in the news a lot this week.  One ref inadvertently tripped a Dallas Cowboys player when he threw his hat on the ground right in front of the player.  Then there was the question of the game ending FG in the Sunday night game, which the refs did get it right by the way, it just did not go the way some fans wanted it to so it is easy to blame the replacement guys.   But there was an even bigger instance in the Monday night game this week.  I must admit that I did not see the play until the next morning.  There are several reasons for that.  First I was watching the season premier of Hawaii Five-O with my wife.  Second I really do not like the Green Bay Packers and unless the Cowboys are playing them I am probably not going to be watching them.  Third, because of some cost cutting and budget crunching decisions we no longer have cable so I couldn’t have watched the game if I had wanted to.  I have seen the play via multiple replays though and I am convinced the refs blew this call.  That is just my opinion though and you are free to disagree with me on that.

I do think it is the nature of sports and the nature of our current culture to always blame someone else and to look for a scapegoat.  The reality is the regular refs would be being bashed just as much by fans and media as the replacements are right now.  It is just easier to pile on the replacements because; well everyone else is doing it.  So while I think blaming the refs and ripping them constantly is childish and a sign of a lack of maturity I expect it from sports fans, however what does concern me is the amount of tweets and facebook posts by pastors and ministers regarding the replacement refs.

Should those called to spread the Gospel be spending so much time vehemently criticizing and ripping things that go on in an entertainment venue?  Should our lives be so consumed and wrapped up in a sport or a team that we question the intelligence and integrity of another individual because of what they do during the curse of a sporting event?  I do not think so!  We should be letting the Gospel inform how we interact with all things even sports.  For one at the end of the day a football game does not matter all that much on a grand scale, and furthermore we should be extending grace and mercy to all people.  So I want to call on fellow brothers in ministry to watch what you say about sports on twitter, facebook, and your blog.  Have grace towards the replacement refs; after all it was a replacement sacrifice that brought us Grace in the first place.
